SEX AS IDEA AS IDEA, Monday

Madeleine Stack:

When we arrive, the mood is glum as the residents focus on an uncertain future.

We want to take the barriers off the front windows – speak to the street.

Outside, it’s raining on commercial road. A voice floats in: shoul we ‘ave chicken, or meat box? The street speaks to us.

After a week of rushing, rushing, it feels so good to be still in the cool dim room and work. like we’ve escaped to a country cottage, only we’re in mile end. we remark again and again how sad it is that this space – a home and a refuge – is going to be taken away by the ‘owners’; as if ownership works like that.

We’re both talking about JK when we say HE. ‘Freud? dude loves Freud. We’re so on the same wavelength our conversation becomes a ping-pong of words, look up, read quote, question?

We talk about Ana Mendieta and Lee Lozano. In my mind they are patron saints of this work. From Wikipedia:

‘Ana Mendieta died on September 8, 1985 in New York from a fall from her 34th floor apartment in Greenwich Village’s 300 Mercer Street,[22] where she lived with her husband of eight months, minimalist sculptor Carl Andre. She fell 33 stories onto the roof of a deli. [23] Just prior to her death, neighbors heard the couple arguing violently.[15] There were no eyewitnesses to the events that lead up to Mendieta’s death[24] A recording of Andre’s 911 call showed him saying: “My wife is an artist, and I’m an artist, and we had a quarrel about the fact that I was more, eh, exposed to the public than she was. And she went to the bedroom, and I went after her, and she went out the window.” In 1988, Andre was tried and acquitted of her murder. During the three-year trial, Andre’s lawyer described Mendieta’s death as a possible accident or suicide. The juror found Andre not guilty on grounds of reasonable doubt.

The acquittal caused an uproar among feminists in the art world, and continues to remain controversial to this day. In 2010, a symposium called Where Is Ana Mendieta was held at New York University to commemorate the 25th anniversary of her death.[26] In May 2014, the feminist protest group No Wave Performance Task Force staged a protest in front of the Dia Art Foundation’s retrospective on Carl Andre.[27] The group deposited piles of animal blood and guts in front of the establishment, with protesters donning transparent tracksuits with “I Wish Ana Mendieta Was Still Alive” written on them. In March 2015, the No Wave Performance Task Force and a group of feminist poets from New York City traveled to Beacon, New York to protest the Andre retrospective at Dia:Beacon, where they cried loudly in the main gallery, made “siluetas” in the snow on museum grounds, and stained the snow with paprika, sprinkles, and fake blood.’

I remember being in New York while this protest happened at the Dia. There was an image in the newspaper of a young woman, possibly an assistant at the Chelsea gallery, gingerly stepping over the blood with a bucket in her expensive shoes, a woman sent to clean up the mess again.

I imagine one of Mendieta’s Silhuetas in the garden space of AA; visitors stepping over and through the outline of pigment or petals. By chance, I received a book in the post as we left the house this morning: Bhanu Kapil’s Ban en Banlieue. In the blurb, a piece of synchronicity: ‘Drawing equally from the works of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha and Ana Mendieta, Ban traces an outline around the charred remains of those disposable bodies, “both dead and never living,” marking the borders of national belonging and permissible sexual violence.’ Stepping over, stepping through, marking a border.

Bjørk Grue Lidin:

‘Hetero-partitioning’ refers to the isolation of certain body-parts turning them into sexual signifiers while leaving any bodily totality unthinkable. I’m thinking of Preciado’s Contrasexual Manifesto as I’m cutting, distorting, sewing and sticking condoms together. Hetero-partitioning reproduces and fossilizes sexual difference. The condom – the barrier – constructs a bipolar relationship between the partitioned hetero-sexualised parts: the pussy and the penis; the penetrator and the receiver; the perpetrator and the victim. Subverting this lubricated barrier into one of resistance and neglect opens up possibilities for sewing together lost bodily totality or creating disruptive sexual signifiers confusing patriarchal conceptualisms.

„Painelectric – distribution board” movie recording at AA

Patryk Lichota & Piotr Bockowski are recording a short film based on their show ‘Painelectric sound tutorial” from Poznan/Berlin that aims at extending notions of body performance & interactive media into sonic pain simulation – you are invited to join this applied research and get electricuted !

„Painelectric – distribution board” movie presents a group of voltage junkies – technological dandies addicted to electric stimulation. They assume a degenerated society of galvanic masonery in the aura of their ancestral priests: Michael Faraday, Nikola Tesla, Georg Matthias Bose, Hippolyte Pixii, Johann Wilhelm Ritter., Ewald von Kleist.

Doses of the electric drug condense in the bodies of participants, their intoxication is boosted and synchronised by convulsions of the master of the ceremony & manipulator of sound apparatus, their movements become a collective vision of the participants. This hedonistic event turns into a new kind of gathering, where the bodies are reduced to hallucinogenic inductive coils and tune nervous systems to unknown channels.

Volunteers are welcome to participate in the infliction and filming of inappropriate voltage to themselves and others. It will take place inside the ‘Emporium’ distribution board at Anatums Abode on Friday 15th May between 10am-3pm

WEIGHT SHIFTING

The idea for the performance draws its elements from self observation. To embody different levels of maturity the artist is deploying movement and voice. Drawing out a time-line consisting of beats intuitively produced by Tania Soubry. The performance aims at representing the mannerism and changes in capacities throughout the passages of ones life.

In this performance about human development and soul searching Time is a continuous happening while Action is decisively placed.  The consciousness to make out this framework derived from active self observation noting subconscious physical and mental moves and challenging them

The public showcase of the findings has no final stance but allows the artist to underline her relation towards the holistic and all encompassing idea of body and soul, working and sharing her progress. The performance can be seen like an ongoing exploration facing an audience – hopefully inspiring others to look at themselves and the manifestations won throughout time.

Jac Auora is collaborating with Tania Soubry after answering an Open Call from Anatums Abode website. The trained dancer and performance artist is particularly interested in the relation between, music, song, sound, voice, rhythm, movement, dance, performance and the body. Within this she is interested in the movement of our consciousness, perceptions and reflections, a verbal , thinking, political, soulful, spiritual and environmental voice.

Anatums lend its Abode for the development of work by the U.S streetartist Sirus Fountain
2 weeks into the process the show opened like a shrine would open up for visitors
people came and stayed, absorbing works that went beyond the visual but provided a setting to engage with the content matter, the place of their creation and the person whos care and vision brought all of this to reality, a reality spent for the next 72 hours
Anatums reluctancy to exhibit murials lead to the artist ex-tracting surfaces that inspired him.
– our rooftop, our secret and guilty skip and the neighbouring environment bore the now remodelled treasures. Sheets of metal and woods of all variations, chipped colours from decades and recent history Sirus deployed them as backdrops for his paintings and came to produce one three dimensional tableaux after the other.
while each is crafted from found material and fitted carefully into the space the content matter of each drawing points to the universal questions and faiths. faces of struggle and lines indicating the rawness of life and its roughness were formulised in bold strokes. they looked at us from the walls :
2 to 3 perspectives of a face in one. six eyes. 3 mouths and angles for the appearance of psychological depth. when asked who these people were Sirus said its travellers and homeless people. the hommage to those he met is hung along angels and figurative sculptures, arranged as if to protect us and them.

walking through the narrow corridors and turning left once more, crossing the garden, past the sauna into the yard before the emporium- the atmosphere was described like being in a church. a hall of greatness. green colours greeted below the black sky, seated on the concrete floor some simply remained : looking, listening, allowing time to pass out there.
the emporium was lit in reds and oranges, strikingly marking the passage. car lights shone through the sitetex wall and allowed the centerpiece to hold attention- now eyes were looking up and eyes were looking straight at you.

in the garden Lee Fükke’s piece kept glowing. once these forms were holding fire, reload wood ! burning away in the night, marking an important assembly point these volumpteaus shapes of metal wiring provide warmth and light.
the sizzeling formed an acoustic backdrop for mondane talk : as a longterm witness reported ! Beatrix Blaise was in the sauna at the time the fire burned. her body painted on by Sirus boasted eyes in striking white, her skin wore a silky faketan – call it bronze.  she moved and froze to stillness surrounded by her installation : rusty metal on white hung in the sauna. Having embarked on a longdurational performance she felt like being the creep in the background, as she mused afterwards. people talked and stood and sat around the fire, the creep moved at times but mostly remained still. with painted eyes on places, she was breathing the night in its own right, pointing out presence in the performance’ subtlety.

the following days people returned, photos were taken. then Sirus work was taken down and moved. for once a street artist’s work could move.
and one frame remained. it is beautiful without the wheat pastings, its a three dimensional object assembled from different parts and its missing nothing. it speaks Sirus, who by now has started buidling a house out of wood on Anatum’s rooftop. And when you come inside the gallery the glass front hosts his scratching, leaving a shadow migrating with the sun.

jac aurora Residency _ introduction

„Weight Shifting“

Short introduction; i am a multidisciplinary artist and performer, i compose music, play voice, write poetry, do performance and workshops, produce pictures and design in different ways, one of my aspirations is to learn a variety of singing technique from all around the world, and be able with precision to produced the sound of my imagination.

I will be in residence at Anatum’s abode for two weeks.
This residence is about the performance „Weight Shifting“ which itself attempt to demonstrate somehow the relation between Body and Soul (subtle body/human consciousness…) and as a part of how we weight ourself on one another.

i will be researching on the body movement (for example, what i think i am capable of doing, but actually am not yet or at all physically able to do) and will practice yoga and experiment with the limit of my body and see if and how i can push them, i will also be researching on the different aspects of the soul ( i use the word soul which embody a lot of different aspect of human personality but i suppose i most likely mean the mind/consciousness, but somehow i would like to include a part of holiness in this notion, so ill research more to see which therm fit best to what i mean) by meditating, doing repetitive action which will occasion daydreaming , reading a lot of documentation .
I will Fast for several day, go into mutism, and observe with focus this relation.

The performance itself will be mostly improvised, this choice here is to represent how i see life through this relation, in the sense that you can/may plan things and hope for them to happen the way you want them, but you can never be sure that the end result will be what you expected.

As for representing time in its own meaning and rhythm, i would like to invite a percussionist, someone very aware and melodious (we would need to rehearse once to see if your sound work with mine :)) so if you are out there dear percussionist contact us Please.

With much love
